Apprentice Program
Objective Involve new racers with MHOSA
Concept Current experienced MHOSA racers (Journeymen) choose a “new” racer (Apprentice) to be a racing partner for a given season.  The Journeyman will “coach” his chosen Apprentice to become knowledgeable about car set-up, race rules, and racing.  A combined scoring system will be used to determine the season's champion Journeyman-Apprentice team.  Championship and other awards with be distributed at the season end.
Program Guidelines The Journeyman-apprentice Program will be based on bi-weekly Thursday evening Stock Class races.  Two scoring systems will be applied to the standard race program to preserve individual accomplishments yet keep track of the Journeyman-apprentice Program championship.

An “average score" system will be implemented so that no Journeyman-apprentice team will have an advantage, regardless of the number of races attended or number of Apprentices per Journeyman.

A one or two dollar surcharge will be collected from each entry to purchase season-end awards.

Scoring All scores will be expressed as a percentage where 100% equals the best possible score (highest number of laps) acheived by any racer for that given race date.  All other scores will be calculated as a percentage of the best score.  Only completed laps will count toward the score (sections will not be considered).  Each Jouneyman-Apprentice team's combined lap total will be divided by 2 and calculated as a percentage of the best possible score.

Example Highest number of laps achieved is 200.
Journeyman total = 190
Apprentice total = 152
Jouneyman total + Apprentice total = 342 / 2 = 171
171 (team lap score) / 200 (best lap score) = 85.5% (round down*)
85% (team's event score)
* All figures will be rounded down.

The season championship will be determined by averaging all the "team event scores."  hence the season ending score (like each race score) will be a percentage less than 100%.  This percentage scoring system will offer the most flexibility and allow even competition regardless of the number of races attended.

Each Journeyman-Apprentice relationship will constitute a team.  Therefore, a Journeyman with two Apprentices will be equal to two teams, i.e. each of a Journeyman's Apprentices will compete against each other using the same Journeyman lap total.

Qualification An apprentice must score in at least three races to be eligible for the season championship.  A "DNF" (Did Not Finish) will not count toward the season score unless it is necessary to qualify (three races).
Rules 1. Apprentices must own their Patriot II car (other "ceramic 8 magent" stock cars, i.e. Tyco 440, Lifelike are eligible but not encouraged).
2. A team must have at least three event scores to be eligible for the championship.
3. Eligibility for Journeyman: any experienced HO racer.
4. Eligibility for Apprentice: beginner HO racer (to be determined by interview with MHOSA)
5. If an apprentice races without his Jouneyman, the absent Journeyman could substitute his most recent score (percentage) to claculate a team score for that event.
Awards Place ribbbons for each race, season end awards.
Other Information If all prospective Apprentices who do not know a Journeyman will be assigned to a Journeyman.

Apprentices may race even if their regular Journeyman is unable to attend.  The lone Apprentice will be asigned to a 'stand-in' Journeyman for the given event.  The regular Journeyman's most recent previous lap total (percentage) will be used to calculate the score in his absence.

Only the Patriot II class races will count toward the Apprentice Program Championship however, apprentices will be encouraged to race both classes of the evening.

Start Date Spring/Summer season 2000 TBA -- (approximately 9 races during May through August)
